Thunder Cake 雷公糕 ISBN 9780698115811
/ 1997-09-01
/ Penguin
From Publishers Weekly In Thunder Cake , a grandmother helps her granddaughter overcomeher fear of thunder by baking a special cake while a stormthreatens. Although the book's concept is good, it does not fulfillits promise. The story is poorly paced: the storm approachesrapidly, but does not break for several pages as Polacco crams indetails, including a lengthy pause while the cake bakes. Theillustrations are less than appealing: both characters' faces arechalky white, draining them of life. Many of the barnyard animalsare drawn out of proportion--Grandmother is almost the same size asa cow she milks, geese are as tall as people. Considering how manychildren are afraid of thunder, it is a shame Thunder Cake is not astronger effort. Ages 4-8. Copyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Publishers Weekly The newest gem from Polacco's treasure chest of family storiesextolls the virtues of reading--and of taking a study break. YoungMary Ellen would rather be "outdoors running and playing" thanindoors with a book. Sympathetic to her feelings, her grandfathersuggests that they find a bee tree. The Michigan woods literallybuzz with activity as Mary Ellen and Grampa chase a pollen-ladenbee to its far-off hive, picking up curious neighbors andpassers-by along the way. Before long the original pair becomes a"thundering stampede of goats, buggies, people and bikes" in searchof honey. Polacco's rollicking text provides a bubbly, adventuroustone for her cumulative romp. Boisterous color brings to life thecharacters' old-fashioned garb and the unspoiled lushness of therural 19th-century setting. Fine pencil detail highlights straypieces of hair blown back by the breeze, and the joy anddetermination on the faces of the honey hunters. Like Mary Ellen, readers will emerge refreshed from this respite,
